317th Airlift Group

The 317th Airlift Group was started in 1942 as the 317th Troop Carrier Group (TCG) and was very active during World War II dropping paratroopers around the Pacific, including a drop in New Guinea which earned a Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) in 1943. In late 1944, the group was transferred to the Philippines to provide supplies to ground troops there. The 317th carried the regiment that was dropped on Corregidor and successfully fought to take Manila Bay for the United States’ fleet to finally gain entrance. This earned the group another DUC. During the early Cold War, the group served as troop carrier over Japan and much of Europe, specifically during the Berlin Airlift. As part of continued support for the UN, USAFE, and NATO, the 317th kept up its actions in France in 1957. In 1967 it became the Troop Carrier Wing (TCW) and began training crews on the C-123. The group spent 1977-88 training crews in Europe on the Adverse Weather Aerial Delivery System (AWADS) that they had developed. In 1990, the group resumed its “old” ways and provided troop carrier and supply drops to Southwest Asia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Since 2003, the 317th has been deployed a majority of the time in support of US action at home and overseas.
